Lead Contamination In Water Affects Over 18 million People

by July 3, 2016

I’m sure most of you are all aware the Flint Water Crisis back in 2014 (result of aging pipes leaking lead into the water supply) a very large investigation had been put under way. This has lead to a very important report.

Water was tested all over the United States by the Natural Resources Defense Council, this council addressed issues with the Safe drinking water act and the problems still being under the lead and copper rule.

In 2015 that it was found that over eighteen million people had been using water systems that were over run with unresolved lead violations. This is a very serious issue and is much larger than it appears.

Why is lead so dangerous?

Lead is very dangerous to our bodies, poison. Once we are exposed to lead it is absorbed and passed out through our bodies in the same way that iron or calcium would be, except this is not a healthy mineral and it begins damaging red blood cells by limiting their ability to carry oxygen. This results in the person becoming anemic. If this lead becomes such a problem that it makes its way to the bone it will reduce the production of calcium and the bones will become extremely weak. Lead poisoning is most commonly from lead paint or lead pipes which were extremely popular before we knew just how toxic they really were.

How do I know if I am going to be affected or am being affected?

Take a look at this map, it shows the areas that have been served with the most lead violations. It seems that while over 5,300 water systems are in violation less than one thousand have actually been fixed.

What is a safe amount of lead?

There is actually a legal toxic amount of lead that is allowed in our water systems. This is according to the EPA’s website. We are not supposed to exceed a level of 15 ppb in more than ten percent of taps sampled.

The center for disease control thinks these numbers are too high and that the levels safe to consume are far lower than what we are set at. It is impossible at this time to reverse the effects lead can have on one’s body yet there isn’t much being done to prevent it.

The EPA has acknowledged that there is an issue here with the lead, there has been a ruling set for 2017 to see if all the issues found back in 2015 have been resolved. In the mean time investing in a water filter night be the smartest thing you can do. For more information on lead in our drinking water watch the video below.

PMS is Not Normal, Your Body is Trying to Tell You Something!

by July 3, 2016

Most women suffer from something known as PMS or Pre-Menstrual Syndrome a week or so before their period, but what most women don’t know is that this is not exactly the way it is supposed to be. Believe it or not, monthly mood swings, breast tenderness, irritability, cravings and weight gain do not have to come with the territory of being a female.

An unbalanced ratio of progesterone in relation to estrogen can cause PMS issues such as insomnia, bloating, moodiness, constipation, weight gain and much more. If any of the above symptoms describe you then this is an article for you!

Why Does This Imbalance Occur?

It is all about two major weaknesses: the liver and a nutrient deficiency. The liver is responsible for the three main jobs that affect hormonal balance.

  • Balancing Blood Sugar– An unhealthy liver cannot do its job of helping to manage blood sugar and storing glycogen, so your adrenal glands kick in and activate the stress response when blood sugar falls too low. This added stress hurts the body’s ability to make progesterone support hormonal balance.
  • Detox– Hormones are the body’s way of sending messages. When a hormone’s message has been sent, the used hormones must be removed from the body. Getting rid of used hormones happens through a process of detoxification.
  • Thyroid Conversion– The liver is one of the organs responsible for the conversion of thyroid hormones. If your liver is malnourished and is unable to store glycogen, less T3 is the result, slowing hormone synthesis.

What to Do:

  • Eat Real Food- Starvation is doing nothing for you, getting in the right kind of foods is important. Problems like PMS are your body’s way of saying it is deficient. A daily dose of dark leafy greens such as kale, collards, and broccoli and good quality fats are your ticket to a happier hormone party. The high fiber content of vegetables can help the body efficiently eliminate excessive hormones from the body.
  • Try and keep meat and dairy to a minimum if you have to consume them at all, and cut out all processed foods and sugars.
  • Nourish Your Liver– Read more about the importance of a healthy liver here, and how to keep it healthy and strong!
  • Balance Blood Sugar– Eat frequently to help stabilize blood sugar.
  • Identify and Reduce Stress– This could be an array of things like lack of sleep, insufficient fuel, or food allergies. You can improve hormonal balance by sleeping seven to nine hours each night, exercise for at least 30 minutes 4 times a week, and meditate.
  • Increase Hormone Synthesis Promoters– Try taking vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Magnesium, Calcium, and Vitamin B6.
  • Probiotics– Probiotics will establish healthy bacterial balance in your digestive system and support the breakdown and elimination of estrogen.

Listen to your body, treat it well and feed it the right fuel. There is no need for your life to be any harder than it has to be.

For the First Time, an Elephant Has Received a Prosthetic Leg

by July 3, 2016

A lovely Asian elephant tragically lost her right foreleg when she stepped on a landmine. In normal cases, this would mean the elephant lost it’s life or was going to but thanks to some amazing people Mosha has a new prosthetic leg!

Mosha is now able to get around just fine and is very happy. This was made possible by a surgeon named Therdchai Jivacate who specializes in designing prosthetic legs for humans and animals.

The Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation learned about Mosha’s story and knew something needed to be done. Dr. Jivacte operated on Mosha and then started designing a leg all of her own. The leg he made for her ended up weighing 33 pounds and was made from thermoplastic, steel, and elastomer.

The doctor has continued to make larger prosthetics for Mosha as she has grown. Each one even better than the last.

Study Finds More Than 24,000 Chemicals in Bottled Water: Which Ones Are Harming You?

by July 2, 2016

Many people believe that bottled water is the superior choice to tap water, but are those people correct? According to a recent study that is not the case!

German researchers at Martin Wagner and Jorg Oehlmann of the Goethe University Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main, and Michael Schlusener and Thomas Ternes of the German Federal Institute of Hydrology have found thatendocrine disrupting chemicals, which could affect development and reproduction, to be contaminated in 18 different bottled water products.

Plastic products that do not contain the hormone-disrupting chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) are increasing in demand. This has actually lead to some very positive changes in the way we manufacture things like water and other beverages.

While this is a good thing we don’t seem to be off to the good start we thought we were. A new study recently done out of Germany has shown that there are thousands of other harmful chemicals still coming off of plastic products and getting into food and drinks. These chemicals include the chemical di(2-ethylhexl) fumarate or DEHF which is completely unregulated and is a known endocrine-disrupting chemical.

Tests were done on eighteen different types of bottled water in order to assess the presence of EDCs. The team used a combination of high-resolution mass spectrometry and bioassay work and were to successfully identify at least 24,520 different chemicals that were present in the tested water.

One of the more concerning chemicals they found in this water was DEHF which is a plasticizer chemical used to make the plastic bottles more flexible. This was found to be the culprit behind anti-estrogenic activity. 90% of the chemicals found in these waters were found to be detrimental to the body’s hormonal system.

This is a big red flag that shows us we really don’t know what we are putting into our bodies. They have taken something that should only have one ingredient, water, and added thousands more. Watch the video below for more information on this matter.
