Homemade Cauliflower Breadstick Recipe

As of late there has been a shift in the world of pizza. With the introduction of cauliflower crust pizza people have been taking a low carb, gluten free approach to enjoying their favorite foods. Well this recipe is an addition of the new and improved way of eating a delicious pizza.

I know a lot of people were speculating about just how good this healthy alternative is. The truth of the matter is that this alternative is utterly delicious! Introducing the cauliflower “breadsticks”. Taking the same approach to breadsticks, as many have done with the pizza, you can ensure a healthy alternative for those breadsticks you have always enjoyed.

If this introduction has still left you with some questions I suggest you put those feelings into making your own cauliflower sticks. I guarantee the results will be fantastic, and much more than you anticipated.

Use these ingredients and follow these directions to ensure you make the best cauliflower “breadsticks” possible!

Ingredients:

–       ½ teaspoon of Italian Seasoning

–       1 teaspoon of dried basil

–       1 egg that has been slightly beaten

–       Marinara sauce for dipping

–       4 cups of cauliflower “rice”, as explained in the directions below

–       2 cups of Mozzarella cheese that has been shredded and divided

–       1 teaspoon of dried oregano

–       ¼ teaspoon of salt

Directions:

 

  1. You must first turn 1 head of cauliflower into a rice texture. Wash and clean the cauliflower and cut it into chunks. Be sure to remove the core of the cauliflower first. Use a food processor and pulse it until the cauliflower has a “rice” consistency. The average cauliflower head can produce 4 cups of cauliflower “rice”. This is the most important step in this recipe.

 

  1. Using a large saucepan, heat 1 inch of water until it boils. Add the cauliflower rice, cover the lid and allow it to steam for at least 4 or 5 minutes.

 

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

 

  1. Use a mesh strainer to drain the cauliflower. Allow it to cool for a few minutes. Then you must place the “rice” into a dish towel and squeeze as hard as you can to remove any leftover water. This is the second most important step in the process.

 

  1. Then you must dump it into a large bowl. Add 1 cup of mozzarella to the cauliflower rice. Then add you egg, then the oregano and lastly the ¼ teaspoon of salt.

 

  1. Stir this mixture very well.

 

  1. Then line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and spray it with cooking spray. Spoon the cauliflower “rice” onto the pan and use your hands to form it into an 8 ½ x 11-inch rectangle.

 

  1. Place it in the oven for 35-40 minutes, or as long as it takes for the crust is golden brown and firm.

Remove the crust from the oven and allow it to cool. Then add the remaining cup of mozzarella and the ½ teaspoon of Italian seasoning.

 

  1. Then place the pan back in the oven for 7-10 minutes, or as long as it takes for the cheese to melt.

 

  1. The last step is cutting the cauliflower crust into “breadsticks”. Then serve them with marinara sauce for your dipping pleasure.

Vegan Diet Cuts Prostate Cancer By 35%, Says Major New Study

Vegans have a 35% reduced risk of developing prostate cancer, according to a major new study funded by World Cancer Research Fund.

Scientists at Loma Linda University in California, USA looked at over 26,000 men, and for the first time assessed the link between prostate cancer and various types of diet including non-vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan diets.

“The evidence around the disease-preventative qualities of the vegan diet is now overwhelming.  Time and again we are seeing new research showing the vegan diet to be significantly better for our health,” said Jimmy Pierce, spokesperson for The Vegan Society.

“Still lingering, however, is the perception that eating meat is macho, that it somehow enhances masculinity or virility. Yet it is killing thousands of men in the UK every year. Now is the time to reject this outdated notion and embrace plant-based living regardless of gender – for the animals and the planet as well as your health,” Pierce added.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK with over 47,000 new cases annually. Over 10,000 men die of the cancer each year, and worldwide it is the second most common cancer in men.

“This exciting research has, for the first time, helped fill some vital gaps in our knowledge about eating patterns and the prevention of prostate cancer. Prevention is key if we are to see a decrease in the number of men developing the disease,” said Dr Panagiota Mitrou, Director of Research Funding at World Cancer Research Fund.

Today’s findings are very similar to those published by the American Society for Nutrition in 2014 which concluded that high intakes of dairy products may increase prostate cancer risk.

It also comes just months after the World Health Organization classified processed meat as carcinogenic to humans, on a par with tobacco. Eating just 50g per day (two rashers of bacon) increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%, its report found.

You Should Never Wash Raw Chicken Before Cooking It, Just Do This

Washing raw chicken before cooking it seems like common sense to most people. Everybody knows that raw chicken contains bacteria that can be harmful to us. So why not be extra careful and rinse your chicken off before cooking it?

Well, according to the Food Standards Agency, washing your chicken may contribute to the spread of these harmful bacteria rather than the disinfection of them.

Here is a breakdown of why washing raw chicken can be harmful to your health and how you can still enjoy chicken while avoiding all of those nasty bacteria.

Why you shouldn’t Wash Raw Chicken

Raw chicken is full of bacteria that can cause people to become seriously ill or even worse. The most common causes of food poisoning in North America come from campylobacter and salmonella, two different types of bacteria that can be found in uncooked chicken.

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that is commonly found in the intestines of birds. People who eat food contaminated with salmonella develop symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. Most people who become sick from salmonella exposure recover after a few days, however some people develop more serious illnesses and sometimes die due to them. An example of one of these illnesses is septicaemia, otherwise known as blood poisoning.

Campylobacter is the leading cause of diarrheal illness in the United States. This illness can last for up to 10 days and causes extreme abdominal pain. Certain long term effects from exposure to campylobacter have also been reported. These include arthritis and the development of a rare disease called Guillan-Barre syndrome. Guillan-Barre syndrome causes muscle weakness and affects the nervous system, and roughly 40% of Guillan-Barre syndrome cases in the United States are attributed to exposure to campylobacter.

According to the Food Standards Agency, campylobacter cannot be “cleansed” through the use of water. In fact, washing uncooked chicken that contains this bacteria can majorly contribute to it’s spread through water particles. This means that if you wash an infected piece of chicken, you not only have to worry about the area that your chicken comes in contact with but also the area that the water you used comes in contact with. This can lead to your kitchen becoming a minefield of harmful bacteria.

How to Avoid Food Poisoning

According to the Food Standards Agency, the best way to ensure that all of the harmful bacteria in your chicken is killed off is to cook it as thoroughly as possible.

Make sure the chicken is steaming hot all the way through before you serve it. Cut in to the thickest part of the meat and check that it is steaming hot with no pink meat and make sure that all of the juices run clear.

Also, be sure to store your chicken at a temperature below 4 degrees Celsius, as storing it at a higher temperature can allow the chicken to become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Even if you have an otherwise healthy stomach, you may not be spared, as hydrochloric acid is used to decompose food in your stomach. The digestive disturbances caused by this may especially show up in heavy meals which then are particularly difficult to decompose proteins.

Those proteins that remain completely broken down in your body are able to cause numerous health problems, such as commonly known bloating, irritation, or inflammation of the intestines and in the worst case scenario even colon cancer.

Most researchers will argue that it is best start consuming coffee only one full hour after having gotten up and after at least a piece of bread has been eaten. Coffee should not be consumed immediately after waking up because that way, the level of the cortisol in the body is rapidly increasing, so it takes time for the level to be stabilized.

Cortisol is responsible for control of the biological clock and promoting wakefulness. So, a cup of coffee on an empty stomach can cause increased acid, bloating, and even vomiting. If your habits do not allow you to eat breakfast in the morning after waking up, and you can’t start your day without a morning coffee,  at least put a little milk or butter to alleviate.

DIY Bug Repellent Summer Mason Jar Luminaries

Winter is coming to an end, and spring is beginning; you know what that means don’t you? Bugs. Say bye bye to bugs with these easy chemical free luminaries!

Let’s whip these up, shall we?

Supplies You Need:

4 Mason Jars (you can also recycle jelly jars, etc)

40 drops each – Cedarwood, Lavender, Lemon and Thieves essential oils (or use your own combination of oils but these are known to help to repel the buggies). This equals TEN drops of each oil / jar.

2 fresh lemons

2 fresh limes

8 sprigs fresh rosemary

water

Floating tea light candles

Directions:

To Assemble these are just so easy.  I lined up my 4 mason jars and here’s what you do:

Slice the lemons and the limes and set aside for a moment – I like to have two each just in case but you can possibly use one each

Place two sprigs of rosemary  into each jar

Fill each jar 3/4 full with water

Add the essential oils of your choice  – 10 drops each per jar – and swirl slightly

Place a slice each of lemon and lime into each jar

Add more water if needed to raise the level to almost full

Place a floating tea light candle on top

Set outside, light and make some magic once you light them*

Replace tea lights as needed – I recommend having some extras on hand!

Discard fruit and liquid in jar after 2 – 3 days depending on your climate; rinse jars and start fresh as needed.
