15 Cancer Symptoms Women Often Ignore

Cancer has become more common than ever! Studies show that women often ignore these common indicators of cancer!

In 2016, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 595,690 people will die from the disease. The most common cancers in 2016 are projected to be breast cancer, lung and bronchus cancer, prostate cancer, colon and rectum cancer, bladder cancer, melanoma of the skin, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, thyroid cancer, kidney and renal pelvis cancer, leukemia, endometrial cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

Some of the cancers that most often affect women are breast, colon, endometrial, lung, cervical, skin, and ovarian cancers. Knowing about these cancers and what you can do to help prevent them or find them early (when they are small and easier to treat) may help save your life. Breast cancer is the most common cancer that women may face in their lifetime (except for skin cancer). It can occur at any age, but the risk goes up as you get older. Because of certain factors, some women may have a greater chance of having breast cancer than others. But every woman should know about breast cancer and what can be done about it.

Women’s bodies change all the time. Women experience many different stages of growth in their bodies, but sometimes your body can take an unnatural path. Women should be well aware of the warning signs of cancer. Many women will have early warning signs of cancer. Being able to recognize early warning signs of cancer might be able to save a life! It is important to stay informed, so here are 15 early warning signs of cancer that women shouldn’t ignore.

Breast Changes

Most breast lumps aren’t cancer, but your doctor should always check them. Let her know about changes such as skin dimpling, skin puckering, nippes that turn inward, nipple discharge, or redness and scaling of the nipple or breast skin.

Bloating

Marleen Meyers, MD, an oncologist at NYU Langone Medical Center says that women are natural bloaters. But she also says that If your symptoms don’t get better with time, or if they happen with weight loss or bleeding, see a doctor. Constant bloating can sometimes mean ovarian cancer. You’ll have a pelvic exam as well as blood tests, and sometimes an ultrasound.

Between-Period Bleeding

If you’re still getting periods, tell your doctor if you’re spotting them. Bleeding that’s not a part of your usual monthly cycle can have many causes, but your doctor will want to rule out endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of your uterus).

Skin Changes

A change in the size, shape, or color of a mole or other spot is a common sign of skin cancer. See your doctor for a thorough exam and perhaps a biopsy. This is one time you don’t want to wait, Meyers says.

Blood in Urine or Stool

Talk to your doctor if you’re bleeding from a part of your body that normally doesn’t, especially if the bleeding lasts more than a day or two, Meyers says. Bloody stool is often from hemorrhoids, but it can also be a symptom of colon cancer. Bloody urine is usually the first sign of cancer of the bladder or kidneys, says Herbert Lepor, MD, a urologist at NYU’s Langone.

Lymph Node Changes

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands around the body. Most changes in them come from common infections. But some cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma, can also cause lymph nodes to swell. It’s a good idea to see your doctor if you have a lump or swelling anywhere in your body that lasts a month or more, Meyers says.

Trouble Swallowing

Occasional trouble swallowing is nothing to worry about. But when it happens often, especially with vomiting or weight loss, your doctor may want to check you for throat or stomach cancer.

Random Weight Loss

Most unintended weight loss is not cancer, Meyers says. “It’s often caused by stress or your thyroid, but it can be a sign of pancreatic cancer,” she says. Stomach and lung cancers are also possible. Your doctor may ask for a lot of tests to look for a problem, including blood tests and imaging tests, like a CT scan.

Heartburn

Too much food, alcohol, or stress (or all three) can cause serious heartburn. Meyers suggests that you change your diet for a week or two to see if your symptoms get better.

Mouth Changes 

If you smoke, watch for white or bright-red patches inside your mouth or on your lips. Both can signal oral cancer. Ask your doctor or dentist about tests and treatment.

Fever

A fever that doesn’t go away and can’t be explained could mean leukemia or another blood cancer. Your doctor should get the details of your medical history and give you a physical exam to check for the cause.

Fatigue

Talk to your doctor if your fatigue never gets better or if you have other symptoms, like blood in your stool. Your doctor will ask for your complete medical history and give you blood tests.

Change in Urination

Urinary symptoms can include frequent urination, small amounts of urine, and slow urine flow or a general change in bladder function. These symptoms can be caused by urinary infections (usually in women) or, in men, by an enlarged prostate gland.

Unexplained Pain

Pain can be a result of numerous conditions, but ongoing pain which is unexplained and lasts a month or longer can signal bone, brain, or other cancers. Ask your doctor about any suspicious prolonged and unexplained pain.

Coughing

This is probably one of the most mundane and diverse symptoms on the list. There are a ton of different reasons that people cough, and more often than not they are trivial and temporary in nature. It’s when the cough persists over the course of weeks that someone should voice concern.

If you find yourself in pain or short of breath during a cough it could be serious. If you cough up blood, it is serious. Smokers should pay particular attention to coughing, as it’s the most typical sign of lung cancer.

Cancer is not only a malicious disease, but it is also potentially one of the largest pharmaceutical company scandals ever. Many doctors and physicians even say that it is chemotherapy that kills people, not cancer.

There has been extensive amounts of research on cancer, and a cure for it. However, these days you can not ever know which foundation or research program to trust. Some are profiteering CEO’s, and some are legitimate research programs. There has been in depth research performed on many different natural substances and their effects on cancer cells. For example, Tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary chemical in Marijuana, induces a state of apoptosis on a cancer cell, resulting in the cell committing suicide.

Well, it is a fruit that goes by the name of Soursop. Soursop has proven benefits against cancer, and that isn’t all either. It has been proven to be a key anti-inflammatory and helps reduce pain, and the plant has also led to a new generation of drugs. Not only does the fruit effectively treat cancer, it additionally reduces the pain experienced by the cancer patient.

In 1976, the anti-cancer activity of graviola leaves was first noted by the National Cancer Institute, stating that “The NCI, or the National Cancer Institute did some research on the guanabana cancer cure [sic] and came up with some interesting results. McDonald’s is one of the largest fast food chains in the world. They are extremely popular and bring in billions of dollars in revenue each year. How? Well, they’re manipulating your health to profit off of you. Their products have been known to contain harmful chemicals and byproducts. But you might have underestimated how much worse it has gotten – until you see this video.

A TV personality star, Grant Imahara visited the manufacturers of the McDonald’s French fries. What he found wasn’t too yummy. As he stands next to a conveyor belt, he says, “I know what you’re thinking, these look like regular potatoes. But are they really potatoes?”

He describes the process in which the French fries are made and it’s unbelievable that they’re even able to be consumed by people. After being peeled and cut into fry shapes, they are dipped in dextrose, doused in sodium acid pyrophosphate, heated, and then topped off by a trip to the freezer. It’s disgusting!

Before you think about whipping through the McDonald’s drive through, think twice. Is putting your health at risk worth some French fries and a Big Mac?

  1. Asthma

While scientists are continuing to work towards discovering the main cause of asthma, recent studies have found a correlation between lower vitamin D levels and its development. Studies have found that optimal vitamin D levels help to reduce inflammation, including that which cause breathing difficulties during an asthmatic attack. Maintaining higher vitamin D levels has been associated with reducing the intensity of asthmatic symptoms.

  1. Cancer

Individuals with lower levels of vitamin D levels have been shown to be more prone to all types of cancer, including, but not limited to, breast, prostate, ovarian, colorectal, gastric and esophageal cancers. While higher vitamin D levels will not cure cancer, people who have higher levels are statistically less susceptible to cancer in their lives.  This correlation was first discussed in 1941 by U.S. pathologist Frank Apperly. At the time, he published data showing that exposure to UV radiation leads to fewer deaths from many types of cancers.

  1. Cardiovascular Disease

During a recent 10-year study looking at the connection between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in men it was found that those exhibiting low levels of vitamin D were twice as likely to suffer from a heart attack. A similar study assessing both men and women with no history of CVD showed participants with low vitamin D levels were 95% more likely to experience their first cardiovascular event. Patients having previously experienced CVD were 3 to 5 times more at risk for dying from heart failure or sudden cardiac death during a 7-year follow-up period compared to patients of a comparable age and health history with optimal levels of vitamin D.

  1. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Recent scientific developments have allowed medical professionals to begin to have a better understanding of diseases such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and other forms of IBD. One connection that has been drawn in recent studies conducted in both Europe and the USA is that between low levels of vitamin D and a higher frequency of these diseases. Individuals living in areas where their exposure to the sun’s rays are limited are statistically more prone to develop IBD.

  1. Depression

The association between lack of exposure to the suns rays and depressive disorders has been recognized for over 2,000 years. Vitamin D plays an important role in the regulation of several compounds and hormones within the brain including regulating adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine production. It also protects the body against the depletion of serotonin and dopamine. Scientists continue to study and research this connection today, finding that individuals exhibiting low levels of vitamin D are associated with an 8% to 14% increase in depression.

While vitamin D itself does not directly impact the bones, it plays a vital part in promoting calcium absorption in the gut and maintaining blood calcium levels. Optimal blood calcium levels are important to ensure normal mineralization of the bones. A study of older adults aged 50-80 found that those with moderate vitamin D deficiency saw a significant increase in knee pain over 5 years and hip pain over 2 ½ years.

  1. Type-2 Diabetes

Recent research has shown that individuals with higher vitamin D levels exhibit a 43% reduced risk of developing type-2 diabetes compared to those with lower vitamin D levels. These studies are unable to find a difference between maintaining optimal vitamin D levels through supplementation or regular exposure to sunlight.

  1. Dental Cavities

New studies have shown that individuals exhibiting vitamin D deficiencies exhibit a higher instance of dental cavities. A recent study concluded that children found a 47% reduced risk of cavities when they maintained optimal vitamin D levels.

  1. Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults

Recent studies have shown that adults aged 65 year with lower levels of vitamin D have 4 times the increased risk of cognitive impairment such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. While increased vitamin D levels will not guarantee individuals will not suffer from these diseases in their lifetime, elderly individuals who were studied that maintained higher vitamin D levels did better on both decision making and attention/processing speed tests.

  1. Rheumatoid Arthritis

A recent study conducted in Canada demonstrated a significant link between rheumatoid arthritis and lower levels of vitamin D. Research has shown that increased levels of vitamin D in the body resulted in decreased levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation. Those individuals who showed the lowest vitamin D levels were up to 5 times more likely to get a disease related to RA as those that maintain higher vitamin D levels.

What steps can you take to work towards optimal vitamin D levels? While there are a number of ‘vitamin D fortified’ foods on the market and vitamin D supplements are available in most health stores, studies show the best way to raise your vitamin D levels is simply with increased exposure to the sun’s rays! Experts say that 10-15 minutes of sun exposure daily should be all you need. So, grab those shades and spend some quality time outdoors for your health!
