Attention Smokers: These Foods Will Flush Out Nicotine From Your Body

by April 3, 2016

We all know the relationship between smoking and lung cancer, but did you know that it is also linked to other dangerous diseases? For every cigarette you smoke, over 5,000 toxic chemicals are inhaled into the body.

Nitrogen dioxide ozone penetrates your body when you smoke cigarettes. This chemical damages DNA and reduces the amount of vitamin C available for use by the body.

quit-smoking

Why You Should Quit:

  • Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States.
  • Almost one-third of deaths from coronary heart disease are attributable to smoking and secondhand smoke.
  • Smoking is linked to about 90% of lung cancer cases in the United States.
  • About 20 percent of adult men and about 16 percent of adult women smoke.
  • The highest percentage of people who smoke are between the ages of 21 and 34.
  • About 54 percent of American children ages 3-11 are exposed to secondhand smoke.
  • On average, smokers die more than 10 years earlier than nonsmokers.
  • You can be one of the millions of people who successfully quit every year.

What Makes Them So Toxic:

  • 1,3 Butadiene is a chemical used to manufacture rubber. It is considered to be carcinogenic chemical that can cause certain blood cancers.
  • Arsenic is used to preserve wood. Some arsenic compounds have been linked to cancer of the lung, skin, liver, and bladder.
  • Benzene is used to manufacture other chemicals. It can cause cancer, particularly leukemia, in humans.
  • Cadmium is a metal used to make alloy metals, paint, and dyes. Cadmium compounds can cause lung cancer and have been associated with kidney and prostate cancer.
  • Chromium VI is used to make alloy metals, paint, and dyes. Chromium VI compounds can cause lung cancer and have been associated with cancer of the nose and nasal sinuses.
  • Formaldehyde is used to make other chemicals and resins. It is also used as a preservative. It causes leukemia and cancer in respiratory tissues.
  • Tar is not one single chemical, instead, it describes several chemicals that are in tobacco smoke. It leaves a sticky, brown residue on your lungs, teeth and fingernails.

Are You Ready to Quit Smoking Yet? Just Do This!

The greatest drawback of quitting smoking is the fear of feeling anxious and depressed, but there really is nothing to fear because there are many herbs and supplements that can help you stop smoking. These herbs include lobelia for cigarette cravings, ginger for nausea, St. John’s Wort for depression, passion flower for irritability, and Rhodiola for energy.

The therapeutic benefits of essential oils can help you! There have been several studies done on the effects of essential oils on nicotine cravings. In the most recent study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 20 people who were daily users of nicotine products were asked to try aromatherapy instead. They were divided into two separate groups and given an essential oil on a tissue and asked to inhale for two minutes whenever they felt the urge to smoke. The test subjects reported back with their experiences and they found that both essential oils effectively curbed cravings.

Glass dropper filled with herbal essence, aromatherapy oil, homeopathic medicine, or other liquid.

Aromatherapy Recipe Number 1

  • Lemon Juice
  • Black Pepper
  • Eucalyptus essential oil

Method:

Combine all ingredients and apply the oil to skin under the nose or to a cotton ball and inhale with several deep breaths when the urge to smoke arises.

Aromatherapy Recipe Number 2

  • 40 Drops of black pepper essential oil
  • 20 drops clary sage essential oil
  • 30 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 10 drops chamomile essential oil
  • 20 drops sweet marjoram essential oil
  • 24 drops coriander essential oil

Method:

Combine all essential oils in 15ml amber glass bottle. Swirl the bottle gently to mix.

You could use this blend topically, diluted in a roll-on bottle, but this blend is most effective using inhalation rather than topical application. You could also cut the recipe in half, and fill the other half of the bottle with salt; making your own smelling salts.

The following foods can help you cleanse the body of nicotine:

Water- it detoxes the body through the skin and rehydrates it from dehydrating nicotine. Make sure you consume 8-12 glasses daily.

Carrot juice is high in vitamin B, C,A,K, and detoxifies the body, and makes the skin smooth, fresh, and glowing.

Orange- it is high in vitamin C and other nutrients, and reduces stress and treats anxiety

Broccoli- it is high in B5 and C vitamin which are beneficial for the lungs

Dry herbs- they are rich in vitamin A and E and reduce nicotine levels

Kiwi- is abundant in vitamin C, A and E, which are deficient in the body of a smoker

Pomegranate- it boosts blood flow and enhances blood analyses

Spinach- It is high in vitamins and folic acid, and after its consumption, the taste of tobacco is disgusting.

Coconut Oil & Coffee Sugar Scrub Bars

by April 1, 2016

In my opinion, nothing is better than, smooth, soft skin; but those expensive sugar scrubs you see in department stores and spas cost only pennies to make. Store bought personal care items can be filled with toxins, so why not make your own?

These sugar scrub bars are really wonderful! All you have to do is grab a bar before getting into the bath, it makes shower time much simpler because you do not have to worry about water getting into the tub or jar; plus it makes traveling really easy.

Sugar Scrub Bars

  • 1 Cup White or Turbinado Sugar
  • 15 Drops of Essential Oil any fragrance
  • ¼ Cup Brown Sugar
  • ½ Cup Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp Honey
  • 1 Tbsp Fresh Ground Coffee

Method:

Melt the oil over a low heat. Do not let it get too hot. If it does set it aside before adding your sugars; if it is too hot it will melt the sugar.

Mix the sugar and coffee together.

Add the vanilla, essential oil, honey, and coconut oil into your sugar.

Scoop the mixture into a pan and pop in it into the freezer for 20-30 minutes, after that time take them out and cut them into cubes/bars.

That’s it, you are DONE! I like to keep them in the fridge.

Pediatrics Journal Says to Stop Calling Breastfeeding Natural

by April 1, 2016

What do you think of when you think of the word breastfeeding? I think of a beautiful natural way of feeding a baby; according to the Journal of Pediatrics, this just isn’t so…

A recent article in the journal Pediatrics is calling on health professionals to stop saying that breastfeeding is natural, arguing that doing so gives the impression that natural parenting practices are healthier. The authors have actually come to a point to where they have started a public campaign to end the positive use of the word natural, claiming that it is associated with so-called ‘problematic’ practices as home birth, homeschooling, the rejection of GMO foods, and vaccination efforts.

“The idea of the ‘natural’ evokes a sense of purity, goodness, and harmlessness,” Martucci and Barnhill write. “Meanwhile, synthetic substances, products, and technologies mass-produced by industry (notably, vaccines) are seen as ‘unnatural’ and often arouse suspicion and distrust. Part of this value system is the perception that what’s natural is safer, healthier, and less risky.”

The authors even went as far to say, “We should think twice before referencing the ‘natural’ in breastfeeding promotion,’ they write, “even if it motivates women to breastfeed.”

To be clear, breastfeeding is indisputably natural. The very definition of the word natural is; existing in nature and not made or caused by people : coming from nature: not having any extra substances or chemicals added : not containing anything artificial: usual or expected

Well I do believe that breastfeeding meets all of the above qualifications and things like vaccines and genetically modified foods do not. To even suggest that we should campaign to defame all natural practices in an attempt to influence parents to accept vaccines or GMOs is unethical advice; propaganda at its best!

85% of Feminine Products Are FILLED with Monsanto’s Cancer-Causing Glyphosate

by March 31, 2016

The issue of safe feminine hygiene product options is rarely discussed, but it is a vitally important topic for roughly a third of the population. Approximately 43 million women in the United States use tampons, and millions more use pads or sanitary napkins.

Menstruation is and the vagina, generally is a topic that promotes expressions of disgust, mockery, gross-out jokes or pleas for ignorance, particularly from men. But, the truth is feminine hygiene is no joke, so let’s all agree to be adults here and talk seriously about a health issue that affects every woman on the planet.

When you think of the vagina what is the first thing that you think of?  Probably not skin, but that is exactly what you should be thinking of. The skin is, of course, the largest organ in your body. Less than one-tenth of an inch separates your body from potential toxins. Just like the skin of a fruit to herbicide, the skin is extremely permeable, especially the skin around your vagina.

This means that anything coming in constant contact with your skin will land in your bloodstream for distribution. So, you can liken feminine hygiene products to a time bomb, just waiting to explode. How many tampons do you think you use during the span of a lifetime? On average 16,800 and if on estrogen replacement therapy as much as 24,360.

So, What Is Really Going On In Those Sanitary Pads and Tampons?

  1. Chlorine- Chlorine is used to bleach the cotton used in the sanitary products, particularly tampons and menstrual pads.
  2. Dioxins and Furans- Both of which are known carcinogens that can cause reproductive, developmental and hormonal problems, and can have a detrimental effect on the immune system.
  3. Pesticide Residue- Most of the cotton that is used for tampons and pads is made from conventionally grown cotton, which is treated with heavy pesticides. And, while the FDA “recommends” that tampons are free of pesticide residue, resting on the popular o.b. brand detects the presence of pesticides like pyrethrum, procymidone, mecarbam and fensulfothion which are all possible carcinogens linked to endocrine distribution. I would also like to add that most brands use GMO cotton. If you avoid eating GMO foods, do you really want to be using GMO feminine Hygiene products?
  4. “Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single crop. Nearly $2.6 billion worth of pesticides are sprayed on cotton fields each year – accounting for more than 10% of total pesticide use and nearly 25% of insecticides use worldwide.”
  5. Parabens- Found in vaginal anti-itch creams, feminine wipes and washes; typically a preservative. Parabens are skin irritants and allergens, and may have damaging estrogenic properties.
  6. Synthetic Materials- Most tampons and pads are not 100% cotton these days, they are made from synthetic fabrics like rayon, or Super Absorbant Powders. Some of these substances along with the other chemicals and fragrances can cause rashes and skin irritation, particularly when used in menstrual pads.

Pads and tampons are considered “medical devices,” which means that companies do not have to disclose any of the ingredients that they use in their products. Other feminine care products are regulated as personal care products, which means companies can keep fragrance ingredients secret, as well.

What about Toxic Shock Syndrome?

“Researchers don’t know exactly how tampons may cause toxic shock syndrome. Some believe that when superabsorbent tampons are left in place for a long time, the tampons become a breeding ground for bacteria. Others have suggested that the superabsorbent fibers in the tampons can scratch the surface of the vagina, making it possible for bacteria or their toxins to enter the bloodstream.”

Symptoms:

  • sudden high fever (102°F, 39°C or more)
  • nausea or vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • sore throat
  • dizziness
  • fainting or near fainting
  • rashes that look like sunburn (skin peeling may occur days later)
  • muscular pain

How to Minimize Your Risk:

  • Avoid super absorbent tampons, choose the lowest absorbency rate to handle your flow
  • Never leave a tampon inserted overnight
  • Avoid tampons with plastic applicators
  • Alternate between tampons and sanitary pads
  • Change your tampon, at least, every 4-6 hours
  • Do not use between periods

What Are Some Safer Alternatives?

If you want to stick to the convenience of traditional tampons and pads, at least, opt for natural and organic ones. They have become more widely available lately and are around the same price as regular options.

The Best Options

Menstrual Cups

A menstrual cup is exactly what it sound slike, a reusable soft sided cup that fits inside the vagina to collect menstrual flow. It is reusable, leak-proof and much more comfortable than a conventional tampon.

There are many great Menstrual Cups on the market, I personally prefer the Diva Cup. It is medical grade Silicon and considered to be completely safe. There is also no risk for TSS when using this product.

Cloth Pads

Reusable pads are another great option. They are comfortable and have a waterproof liner so that they do not leak through onto clothing.

Sea Sponges

These little sponges are a renewable resource that can serve as an all-natural alternative to tampons. Retailers claim that a menstrual sponge can last up to six months when properly cared for.

I bought mine here!

But, Do They Really Work?

If you don’t, believe me, let the comments speak for themselves! Wellness Mama posted a similar post, and while scrolling through the comments while doing my research, I found these! Here are some of the best!

“I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and my periods have always been unpredictable. I decided to make the switch to cloth pads and I’m so happy that I did. Within just a few months I began to have regular cycles. I used to have heavy bleeding and severe cramps/horrible stabbing pains. I’ve been pain-free and regular for 8 months now. I’ll never go back to chemical ridden disposable products again.”

“Love, love, love my diva cup! Switched about 3 years ago & only wish I’d known sooner. Went from bleeding through a super plus tampon in 20 mins on my heavy day to just having to empty my diva cup morning and night and only once a day the rest of my cycle.”

“Flow went from heavy down to probably less than normal? (define normal) Cycle went from a full 7 days to 3 or 4 days with only 2 being at all heavy. And all but stopped at night. (don’t even need the cup at night) Much less cramps and discomfort in general. I had done a LOT of hormone work the year or so prior to starting to use it, so I’m sure that was part of things, but deff saw some big changes after using it for several months. It takes some getting used to and some trial and error.”

“Menstrual cups have Changed my period! My horrible cramps are a thing of the past!!”

So, while convenience is a good thing, do not let that be the only thing that keeps you from using natural alternatives. Your body and your vagina will thank you! And, remember if you wouldn’t feel comfortable eating a product, do not put it in your body.

11 Surprising Uses for Vicks Vaporub You Didn’t Know About

by March 31, 2016

I have always thought that Vicks Vaporub was just something that you used if you had a cold, but in reality, it has so many unique uses that it is hard to keep track. This stuff is incredible!

Vicks VapoRub has been around for over 100 years, and it is one of the most widely used over-the-counter decongestants. But, lately, there has been a lot of buzz around the internet about unique and unconventional ways to use this pungent ointment. You will be pleasantly surprised to learn that Vicks is a supposed treatment for so much more than just a congested chest!

  1. Stop a Squeaky Door Hinge

If a squeaky door is driving you crazy and you are all out of WD-40, rub a little VapoRub on the door hinge. It will oil the hinge and stop the squeaks.

  1. Alleviate Acne and Blackheads

It might sound crazy, but Vicks helps in clearing your skin blemishes. Apply it on acne 1-2 times a day, to soothe and dry out your pimples.

  1. Dissolve Bruises

Mix a pinch of salt in with your VapoRub and apply it on a fresh bruise. It will break up the bruise quickly to avoid an unsightly mark

  1. Soothe Minor Burns

Quick relief for minor burns is simple! Just run some cool water over the affected area then apply some Vicks.

  1. Heal, toenail or Fingernail Fungus

Toenail and fingernail fungus has got to be one of the grossest things, but no longer do you have to live in shame! Vicks has a fungus fighting ingredients called thymol, and oil that comes from Thyme. Simply apply Vick directly to the nail twice a day. Cover your feet with socks at bedtime, and continue to trim the nails until the infected part is removed.

  1. Headache Relief

A pounding headache and nothing is doing the trick? Never fear, just reach for your VapoRub and apply a little to your forehead and temples. Then mentholated scent will release pressure in your head and instantly relieve or at least reduce your pain within a matter of minutes

  1. Splinters!

VapoRub works wonders for getting that stubborn splinter out of its nesting place!

  1. Tick Tamer

If a tick has burrowed its way into your skin, apply a little Vicks and the little blighter should drop right off.

  1. Stretchmark Savior

Apply Vicks on the stretch marks, and you will notice a difference within two weeks!

  1. Get Rid Of Eczema

Apply VapoRub on eczema affected skin. It will lessen the inflammation and itchiness.

  1. Ear Pain Reliever

Apply a tiny amount to a cotton ball, and put it right on the inside of the ear canal. It will provide instant relief, but be careful not to push it all the way in.

vap1

I personally like to make my own version of the commercially petroleum based vapor rub. I provided the recipe below for your convenience, but this is a preference; if you prefer to use the store bought brand then to each his own my friends. Enjoy!

Homemade Vapor Rub

  • 5 Tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Cocoa butter
  • 1 ½ Tbsp Beeswax
  • 30 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • 12 Drops Each of Peppermint, Lavender and Rosemary
  • 5 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

Method:

In a saucepan, over low heat, add the coconut oil and cocoa butter, melt.

Once melted, add the beeswax and stir until melted.

Remove the pan from the heat, and allow the mixture to sit in the saucepan for 5 minutes. This will allow the mixture to cool so the oils are not damaged.

After 5 minutes, add the eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, and tea tree oils to the coconut oil mixture. Combine with a spoon.

Pour the mixture into a glass jar. I use a mason jar for this. The recipe will make one 4 oz. Jar of Vapor Rub. As it cools the liquid will solidify, making it a creamy spreadable rub.
