Taking a Hot Bath May Burn as Many Calories as a Run, Researchers Say

by April 2, 2017

These days, everyone is looking to shed a few pounds. There are tons of different medications and otc pharmaceuticals that are advertised to be the answer to all your weight loss issues – but they are the exact opposite. Instead, try taking a hot bath!

Of course, the most efficient way to lose weight is to eat healthily and exercise regularly, but not everyone has the time to go to the gym every day. Baths are great for everything honestly. They make you feel better, they get you clean, they relax you, and they make you lose weight too! A researcher at Loughborough University has been studying this subject for a while.

Dr. Steve Faulkner says bathing has similar benefits to exercising – including helping prevent type 2 diabetes! He and his team studied the effects of a hot bath on blood sugar levels and calories being burned. The study involved 14 people each enjoying an hour long soak in a bath that was at 104 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as going on an hour long bike ride. The tests were designed to raise core temperatures by one degree.

“The overall blood sugar response to both conditions was similar, but peak blood sugar after eating was about 10% lower when participants took a hot bath compared with when they exercised,” Dr. Faulkner reports.

He also explained that the anti-inflammatory properties of exercise are important for our immune systems and help us fight diseases: “This suggests that repeated passive heating may contribute to reducing chronic inflammation, which is often present with long-term diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.”

So if you can’t find the time to go for a run, draw a nice warm bath and relax instead! Not only are you treating yourself, you’re also improving yourself!

Combining Multiple Childhood Vaccines in One Visit is NOT Safe

by April 1, 2017

Everyone with kids knows how it goes, vaccines at two months, four months and so forth. However, should we really be letting our children get so many vaccines at one time?

Doctors, of course, will not disclose all of the risks that have been documented associated with the things being injected into your beautiful new bundle of joy. While you would assume your doctor would be someone you could trust with your babies health that is often not the case. There are many childhood vaccines that have not even been safety tested at all.

Most of the time when we take our children in for vaccines they get several at a time, this is not safe. According to medical research journalist Neil Z. Miller, there have been around 500,000 reports of adverse events that have occurred because of this. His study showed that infants who received several vaccines concurrently were significantly more likely to be hospitalized than infants who received fewer vaccines simultaneously.

It was also shown that the adverse effects associated were more likely to lead to death in younger infants because of this vaccination schedule. Infants who received five or more vaccines concurrently showed almost six percent fatalities. This is a lot when compared to the three percent of those who received less than four at a time.

If you are a new mom or have recently had or will be having another child please take this into consideration. If you feel like you must vaccinate please spread them out. It will be very beneficial to the overall health of your child.

You Could Be Killing Hummingbird Populations: Here’s How to Save Them

by April 1, 2017

Hummingbirds are fascinating and beautiful, lots of us enjoy seeing them around our homes and in our gardens. These precious little birds are great pollinators and make any yard more fun.

However, just because you put up a feeder doesn’t mean you are helping them out. Many people simply put their feeder out and do not bother to clean it or refill it as often as they should. You see, if you do not take the necessary steps to provide healthy nectar and clean feeders these hummingbirds could literally die.

These hummingbird feeders have to be kept free of mold and fungus as it can cause serious infections and be fatal to these adorable little creatures. The main fungal infection they can get is something that causes their tongues to swell making it impossible for them to feed. Yes, not keeping your feeder clean could force a hummingbird to starve to death.

The possible negative outcomes don’t stop there either if you don’t change your nectar out as needed the nectar will ferment. If a hummingbird eats fermented nectar it can cause liver damage. It is very important that when you are purchasing a bird feeder you get one that is easy to clean.

When it comes to cleaning your feeder flushing it with hot water is the best place to start, you should then use a bottle brush to scrub the insides well. Please avoid using any kind of soap as it will leave a residue. Vinegar is great to use when rinsing. Always inspect your feeders thoroughly for mold. If you notice mold you don’t have to throw your feeder out just boil it in a gallon of water with about a fourth cup of bleach for an hour.

I myself do not buy nectar from the store, I make my own. It is actually quite easy and you will never have to question whether what you are using is safe for the birds or not.

Homemade Hummingbird Nectar

Ingredients:

  • White cane sugar
  • Water

Directions:

  • Bring a pot of water to boil (I use four to six parts water as I fill several feeders.)
  • Mix cane sugar in (ordinary cane sugar, for the six parts water I use about two parts cane sugar.)
  • Stir the sugar in order to dissolve it.
  • Then turn off the stove and allow the solution to cool to room temperature before filling the feeder.

You see, by boiling the water you are also slowing the fermentation process of the nectar itself. The hummingbirds will add healthy microbes to this as they feed and it will become even healthier for these pretty birds. If you notice the nectar has become cloudy it is time to change it. This solution will spoil in about two or three days and will need to be changed. If you want to avoid wasting nectar only fill the feeder as much as the birds will ingest over the two or three-day time frame. You can refrigerate the excess and it should stay usable for a few weeks.

If you want these amazing little birds to stick around you need to take good care of them. Please take this into consideration as summer is approaching and spring is here. They will appreciate what you do for them.

These Kids Avoided A Potential Abduction After Using Three Words Their Mom Taught Them

by April 1, 2017

Sadly, child abduction happens a lot in today’s society, it seems like every day that I am getting amber alerts on my cell phone and it has only gotten worse. Thankfully a new child safety program is replacing the ‘stranger danger’ philosophy with ‘tricky people’ to teach kids how to identify safe and unsafe strangers.

Being forced to leave your children is a nightmare scenario for any parent. As a mom of four, Jodie Norton had to find out the hard way, thankfully she armed her children with the correct safety advice.

Jodie was forced to leave her two oldest children, CJ, 10 and T-Dawg, 8 on their own outside of the emergency room. Jodie was suffering from a ruptured ovarian cyst and drove herself to the nearby hospital where she was admitted to the ER. The children had to wait outside the ER door on a bench to wait for a helpful neighbor who was coming to pick them up and take them to school.

Jodie had assumed that her neighbor was coming from his house, which was only five minutes away. However, the children actually ended up waiting outside for nearly 40 minutes.

While they were there, Jodie explained that the boys “were approached by an adult female and two punk males who asked them if they’d ‘help them out by going into the bathroom where her boyfriend was hiding from the doctor and see if they could convince him to come out and get treated.’”

CJ, the oldest boy, began to repeat “no, thank you” at the strangers, in an attempt to make them go away. The strangers persisted, saying: “Please? You could really save his life if you could just go in that bathroom and tell him it is safe to come out.”

Thankfully, the strangers eventually gave up and drove off. Then, “Shortly afterward, the neighbor showed up and my boys jumped in his car, but, not before they saw a third adult male come out from the bathroom, jump into the car with these other three hooligans and drive off. My mouth hung open the entire time they relayed this account.”

She added: “My anger and shock turned to immense gratitude, however, when I heard CJ spout off a family ‘stay safe’ rule we went over way too long ago that helped him know these creeps were up to no good. Most specifically, a tip for identifying a ‘tricky person.’”

The oldest boy, CJ, told his mom: ‘I knew they were tricky people because they were asking us for help. Adults don’t ask kids for help.’

The concept of “tricky people” is the invention of Pattie Fitzgerald, the creator of Safety Ever After, a site dedicated to life-saving safety tips for kids. This idea is to stop kids associating the word “stranger” with danger since sometimes, asking a stranger for help is the best course of action for a young child in danger.

Safety Every After suggests that adults talk to their kids about “tricky people”. These are adults who will go up to children and ask them for help, even if there are adults around. Since no adult would seriously consider asking a child for help when there are adults around, it is generally a clear indicator that something is up.

Patti’s prevention tips:

  • Remind your children, safe grownups don’t ask kids for help
  • Never leave you child unsupervised, not even for a minute
  • Replace the word stranger with tricky person. It’s not what someone looks like it’s what they say that makes them unsafe, or ‘tricky’
  • A tricky person can be someone you know well, don’t know, or just know a bit. Anyone who tries to get a child to break their safety rules, or hurt their body is not OK
  • Practice personal safety strategies with kids. What would they do if they were lost in a store?
  • Do no write your child’s name on the outside of any personal belonging, like backpack or jacket.
  • Establish the family rule – no secrets allowed, especially if it involves private parts
  • Spend time with your kids. Children who are starved for attention can be especially vulnerable to a predator’s tricks

It’s worth teaching the children in your life the rules Jodie’s kids clearly know so well, it could save a lot of families a LOT of heartache.
