First of its Kind Study Shows That Change in Diet Alone – Not Drugs – is Curing Diseases
Clinical evidence has been found showing that food can indeed be medicine! This is something we have known for quite some time, however, it is finally being proven in many ways!
Dr. David Suskind, a gastroenterologist at Seattle Children’s is working hard to do all he can with this subject. While more studies will need to be done this is a big step in the right direction. This one of a kind study done by Dr. Suskind was published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology.
Dr. David Suskind, a gastroenterologist at Seattle Children’s, is breaking the mold. Suskind has produced the first clinical evidence that food can indeed be medicine.
“In a first-of-its-kind-study led by Suskind, published today in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, diet alone was shown to bring pediatric patients with active Crohn’s and [ulcerative colitis] into clinical remission…
In the small, prospective study, patients were put on a special diet called the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) for 12 weeks as the sole intervention to treat their Crohn’s or UC. SCD is a nutritionally balanced diet that removes grains, dairy, processed foods and sugars, except for honey. The diet promotes only natural, nutrient-rich foods, which includes vegetables, fruits, meats and nuts.
At the end of the 12 weeks, eight out of the 10 patients who finished the study showed significant improvement and achieved remission from the dietary treatment alone.”
It showed that diet alone was bringing pediatric patients with active Chron’s and ulcerative colitis into clinical remission. This small study was one in which patients were put on a special diet. One that was designed to be nutritionally balanced known as the specific carbohydrate diet (SDC.) These patients used this diet for twelve whole weeks as the sole treatment for their health issue. You see, SDC is a diet that removes grains, processed foods, sugars (except honey), and dairy. It promotes only natural nutrient dense foods like meat, nuts, veggies, and so forth.
At the end of their twelve week, treatment eight out of the ten patients who were participating in the study showed significant improvement and actually were able to achieve remission from the diet itself. Of course adjusting to this diet is something considered difficult from the beginning it does amazing things. Would you change your diet if it meant your whole life would be changed for the better?
